Electric and Hybrid Salvage Cars: What Is Different

A salvage electric or hybrid car follows the same auction rules as any other, but the high-voltage battery and electric drivetrain change the risks and the repair math. Here is what to weigh before buying one.

The battery is the big number

The traction battery is often the single most expensive part of the car. Damage to it, or to the pack's cooling and structure, can cost more to replace than the rest of the repair combined. A front or rear hit that seems moderate can involve the battery on a car where the pack sits low and wide.

Damage types to watch

• Flood and water. Especially serious on a high-voltage car. Water and battery packs are a safety and cost problem, not just a corrosion one.
• Underbody impact. The pack sits under the floor on many electric cars, so a hard bottom-out can damage it.
• Fire history. Battery fires are difficult to assess and can reignite. Treat any fire brand on an electric car with extra caution.

Safety and handling

High-voltage systems require trained handling and specific tools to make safe before repair. This is not a driveway job. Factor in a shop that is qualified for electric drivetrains.

The buying view

Read the damage location against where the battery and its cooling sit. Get a battery state-of-health check where possible, because a degraded or damaged pack undermines the whole car. If the pack is in question, the discount has to be large enough to cover a possible replacement, or the car is not the bargain it looks.
