How to Decode a Window Sticker and Build Sheet

The original window sticker, and the factory build sheet behind it, record precisely how a car was specified when it was built. Together they are a strong tool for confirming that a used car matches its description.

What each document is

• Window sticker. The label displayed on a new car, listing the model, trim, engine, options and the original price.
• Build sheet. The factory record of every option and package fitted to that specific VIN.

What they confirm

• Trim and engine. Whether the car is the trim and engine the seller claims, not a lower model dressed up.
• Factory options. Which packages, wheels, interior and safety features were actually fitted.
• Original equipment. A baseline to check that major parts have not been swapped for cheaper ones.

How to get one

Some makers offer a build sheet by VIN through an official lookup. Otherwise the original sticker may come with the car's paperwork. Match the VIN on the document to the VIN on the car before you trust it.

Using it against the car

Walk the options list against the physical car. Missing features, mismatched wheels or an interior that does not match the sheet point to either a wrong document or changed parts. A build sheet that matches, feature by feature, is good evidence the car is genuine and unmodified.
